MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Jannik Sinner rallied from two sets down to take the Australian Open final from Daniil Medvedev 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday and clinch his first Grand Slam title. He’s the first Italian to win the Australian Open title in what could be a generational shift in tennis. For 2021 U.S. Open champion Medvedev, the loss was his fifth in six major finals. Nobody had done that on the way to an Australian Open final since Pete Sampras in 1995. In the sixth game of the fifth set, Sinner had triple breakpoint against a fatiguing Medvedev.

Sinner ended defending champion Novak Djokovic’s 33-match winning streak at the Australian Open, a run stretching back to 2018, to reach his maiden grand slam final, where he will face Russia’s Daniil Medvedev on Sunday. It was put to Sinner after his semifinal win that he, Alcaraz and Holger Rune seem to be having more success than the generation before them. Medvedev is bidding to win his second grand slam title. David Gray/AFP/Getty ImagesThis is the 27-year-old’s third Australian Open final after losing to Djokovic in 2021 and Nadal in 2022, but Medvedev is now much more assured in his game, highlighted by his stunning semifinal comeback over Alexander Zverev. But it is what it is, and I’m proud and looking forward to the final to give my 100% again.”

CNN —It looked on paper to be an easy start to Novak Djokovic’s Australian Open campaign, but the 24-time grand slam champion was given a scare by Croatian youngster Dino Prizmic in a thrilling first round encounter on Sunday. The 18-year-old impressed during his debut in a grand slam main draw. However, the effort it took to temporarily take the lead against the Serb looked to take its toll as Prizmic’s level began to drop as the match wore on. Djokovic, who had picked up a minor injury ahead of this year’s Australian Open, began to click into gear and recovered to win the third set. “He deserves every applause, every credit he got tonight,” Djokovic added.

Filed: November 29, 2022, 11.00 a.m. GMTThe year was filled with sporting excellence, broken records and newly-crowned champions, and Reuters photographers were present to document every major twist and turn. In soccer, the Women’s World Cup shattered several attendance and viewership records, but Spain’s win was overshadowed by a sexism storm that attracted global headlines. Manchester City won their first-ever Champions League trophy en route to the treble and Napoli lifted their first Serie A title in 33 years. Novak Djokovic’s quest to establish himself as the greatest-ever men’s tennis player was the highlight of the tennis season. He won three major titles, although he ultimately lost the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz.

That he lost one of his matches after having three match points was incredulous, given there is no one more adept at closing out a match than the world No.1. He was beaten in both the singles and doubles in Malaga, Spain as Italy beat Serbia 2-1 to set up a Davis Cup final against Australia on Sunday. “Obviously playing doubles in the decider of a Davis Cup tie is not easy. It was the Serb’s first singles defeat in the Davis Cup since 2011, when he was forced to retire injured against Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro. “For me personally it’s a huge disappointment, because I take the responsibility, obviously having three match points, being so close to winning it,” said Djokovic, per the Davis Cup website.

CNN —Jannik Sinner brought Novak Djokovic’s 19-match unbeaten run to an end on Tuesday, defeating the world No. 1 at the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy. Tiziana Fabi/AFP/Getty ImagesIt was Sinner’s second win at this year’s ATP Finals – the end-of-season competition for men’s tennis. The ATP Finals sees the eight top-ranked men battle it out to become the end-of-season champion. The 36-year-old has won six ATP Finals titles during his career, including four consecutive wins between 2012-2015.

Djokovic’s coach, grand slam champion Goran Ivanišević, has been a member of the 36-year-old’s inner circle since 2019 and he heaped praise on Djokovic’s record-equalling achievement. “This is one of the biggest achievements in sports history, not just tennis.”‘A winner’If Djokovic winning in New York felt inevitable, so too does the possibility of him winning another grand slam before he retires. He admitted himself that Medvedev probably played better in the second set and arguably deserved to win it. But, when it really mattered in the second set tie-break, Djokovic found those extra inches which make him such a dangerous man in those clutch moments. Once the second set was tied up, Djokovic looked reenergised and battled through to yet another memorable win.

PARIS—Most of Novak Djokovic’s opponents on a tennis court never see an opening to beat him. But a select few, usually ranked among the top 10 players in the world, carve out a chance. They briefly muscle Djokovic onto the ropes and test his 36-year-old legs. Some even take a set or two.

CNN —A French Open doubles match ended controversially on Sunday as No.16 seeds Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi were disqualified from the tournament after a ball girl was hit by a ball. Eurosport coverage showed Kato innocuously hitting the ball to the back of the court after a point, and though it didn’t appear as if she intentionally meant to hit the ball girl, the ball hit her head. Standing at the back of the court, the tearful ball girl was visibly shaken. Ball not hit in anger whatsoever, just hit across to ball girl to keep the match flowing because it was the other team’s turn to serve. Ball girl had hands full, reacted late.”It isn’t the first time a player has been defaulted at a grand slam.

1 was beaten by Holger Rune in the Italian Open quarterfinals. It will be the first time since 2004 that neither Djokovic or Rafael Nadal will be in the final of the Italian Open, according to the ATP. Holger Rune celebrates after defeating Novak Djokovic. Huge credit to Novak, I’m a big fan of his. Holger Rune has two consecutive wins over Novak Djokovic.
The incident occurred at the start of the second set and despite an instant apology from Norrie, Djokovic did not respond well, proceeding to stare down his opponent. Justin Setterfield/Getty Images“Maybe you could say he didn’t hit me deliberately,” Djokovic told reporters after his 6-3 6-4 win in the round of 16. He’s allowed to hit a player. He’s allowed to say ‘come on’ in the face more or less every single point from basically first game. Tiziana Fabi/AFP/Getty ImagesHowever, Djokovic didn’t let his unhappiness with Norrie impact his form on the court as he eased towards a place in the Italian Open quarterfinals.
It’s Called Eurovision. So Why Is Australia Part of It?

The Australia Letter is a weekly newsletter from our Australia bureau. Eurovision is usually held in the country that won the previous year, but Liverpool, England, is hosting the competition on behalf of last year’s champion, Ukraine. Voyager has a lot riding on its performance, given this is the last year Australia is guaranteed to compete in Eurovision. While Australia is not the only non-European country to compete in Eurovision — Israel made its debut in 1973 — it is certainly the most distant. Since Australia started participating in 2015, fans and commentators alike have wondered: Why does a country on the other side of the world participate in what is ostensibly a European song contest?
Novak Djokovic’s father decided to stay away from the 21-time Grand Slam champion’s semifinal after getting embroiled in a flap involving spectators who brought banned Russian flags to Melbourne Park, Tennis Australia said Friday. “Throughout the event, we’ve spoken with players and their teams about the importance of not engaging in any activity that causes distress or disruption,” Tennis Australia said. Four people were kicked out of the tournament because of the flags and for threatening security guards that night, police and Tennis Australia said. Australian Open organizers have issued a reminder to players and their entourages about their policy on “inappropriate flags” after a video emerged showing Novak Djokovic’s father posing for pictures with fans holding Russian flags. Four fans with “inappropriate flags and symbols” were questioned by Victoria Police following Wednesday’s quarter-final between Djokovic and Russia’s Andrey Rublev. Late on Wednesday another video showed Djokovic’s father Srdjan posing for pictures with fans holding Russian flags. Russian forces have used the letter “Z” as an identifying symbol on their vehicles in Ukraine following the invasion. Russian and Belarusian players were banned from Wimbledon last year but are able to compete as individual athletes without national affiliation at Melbourne Park.
